After breakfast, I get up and head back to my room. Almost on cue, when Ally sees me heading for the door, she makes her way toward Avi. I’m not sure how this will work out. Then Sam gets up and heads toward them both. Whatever happens, I’ll hear about it later. I’m not worried; Ally can hold her own.

“Hello, Levi and Lucy. Good morning to you both. Are you awake enough to dive or do you need some strong Caribbean coffee?” I say as I meet them on the sandy walkway.

“Dad, it’s too early for words,” Lucy whines. Levi doesn’t say a word but continues to shuffle his bare feet through the sand toward breakfast.

“Good day to you both, my loves,” I cheerily call back knowing they won’t give me a second thought until some simple starches and sugar jump-start their brains.

In our cabin, I slide out our suitcase with the gold pound bars stacked neatly into it. I’m tall and lean, with wiry muscles over my frame. With scuba gear on, it usually takes only six pounds of lead to make me sink in salt water. Ally takes eight pounds. Levi takes four and Lucy three. Between the four of us, that’s twenty-one pounds. Twenty-one pounds of gold is just over five hundred thousand U.S. fiat money. Problem is, as we deposit the weight in the sea crevasses, we’ll become lighter, even more so coming up from the depths. This presents the real risk that as we deposit our cache, we’ll rise to the surface too fast, causing the bends.

I sit on the bed and do the risk calculations. Allison comes into the equation first. She’s the weakest diver of our crew and the least confident underwater. I’ll give her only four pounds of gold, leaving her with four pounds of lead. She can hold onto the line tied from the boat to the marine concrete in the seafloor as she ascends. That’s a hundred grand on my wife.

Levi usually takes four pounds. I’ll give him three pounds of gold, about seventy grand, and two of lead. He’s a fish and could easily out-dive me. He’ll figure it out.

I’m going to give Lucy one of gold and two of lead. She’s the youngest and my daughter. Any decent man protects his daughter at all costs. I’m not taking any risks with her. She’ll carry twenty-four grand.

For me, I’ll gamble it all. I’m going down with no lead, only gold. A really good diver can adjust buoyancy by the amount of air they hold in their lungs, and I’m the best at that. A shiver runs up my spine and spills over my arms. I recall The Fearless, the dive my best friend and I tackled in the British Virgin Islands over two decades ago. Kane ran out of air; I nearly did.

I would have died fighting blackout, until Allison entered my thoughts and told me in a vision that we had a son on the way. Against all that was pulling me toward death, this vision made me fight to rescue us both.
